Throughout our lives, we are guided by invisible forces that act as signposts, showing us the way along our path towards our destination. You might call them guides, or angels, your higher self, God, the universe, or the Source. These signposts come in many forms – sometimes very subtle, sometimes very obvious, right in front of you. They range from spontaneous insights, chance encounters, meaningful recurring numbers, names and objects, to strange occurrences.
In my own life, these signposts have played an important role in the major turning points I have experienced. This was also the case with our move to Portugal. On a physical level, there was a mayor who turned up on the doorstep of our house in the Netherlands with the news that the estate from which we were renting our home had been purchased by a government body, which suddenly put our housing security in jeopardy. This prompted us to look beyond our national borders for different living conditions. It later became clear that it was our soul – our higher self – that wanted us to be in Portugal, and the earthly circumstance was simply the trigger we needed to get moving.
During our exploratory tour of Portugal, undertaken to find out which region appealed to us most as a place to emigrate to, we visited many lovely places and discovered how we ourselves – and our bodies – reacted to the energy of the different locations. On the way from Castelo Branco to Serta, we decided to avoid the motorway and wound our way along a winding route through a mountainous area with beautiful views, passing through many picturesque villages.
At one point, Maxim suggested we park the car and take in the panoramic view. We got out and were overwhelmed by the tranquillity and beauty of the valley, with only the sound of birds and the flowing water of the little river that ran through the valley to our right. Across the valley lay a small village of about forty houses, surrounded by rolling woodland and olive groves framed by grapevines.
When we then looked to the left, we saw three large, beautiful houses perched on top of the ridge. The exclamation ‘Wow, just imagine living here’ slipped out of our mouths. We got back into the car and continued our journey.
Two months later, we had a list of thirteen potential houses to view in five days, in a wide variety of locations within the Castelo Branco district. A few days before setting off for Portugal, a house suddenly popped up on the Idealista app that we hadn’t seen before; its price had been reduced, meaning it suddenly fell within our budget and came to our attention. At the last minute, whilst we were already on our house-hunting tour, we managed to arrange a viewing of this house too, to take place at the end of our trip.
It was only as we approached this house that we recognised the valley where we’d stopped two months earlier, and it turned out to be one of those three houses perched on the ridge that we’d seen on our previous trip! We had no idea that one of these houses was for sale.
And then it was a flurry of ‘coincidences’. The house number turned out to be the same as my birthday, the original asking price corresponded exactly to the time I was born, and the names of the homeowners’ children were my father’s first name and surname (and therefore also my own surname). The house is also painted pink, the colour that dominates my energy field. Maxim sometimes jokes, ‘a pink house for a pink lady’.
The estate agent who handled the sale of the house was called Angela; to us, she was a real angel by our side throughout the entire buying process, and it was her initiative that persuaded the owners to lower the asking price, which meant the house came onto our radar at the last minute.
Once we’d decided on this house and gone ahead with the purchase, Spirit conveyed the message:
“We selected this house for you; you have earned it.” And later, whilst meditating, once again: “This is the plan.”

With love,
Karin
